The American Voice in Philosophy

With four project members based in the School of Philosophy at University College Dublin, The American Voice in Philosophy is an interdisciplinary initiative aiming to foreground the literary and historical dimensions of philosophy in America. It is our stated aim to broaden the scope of American philosophy from the analytic tradition as narrowly understood to the discipline’s potential affinities with U.S. intellectual history and literary studies. To date, the project has secured a number of awards and grants. We are grateful to the Irish Research Council, the Society for Advancement of American Philosophy, UCD Research and UCD’s Clinton Institute for American Studies.

The first two strands of the project have successfully completed. Strand 1, “The American Style in Philosophy”, took the form of a two-day international conference at University College Dublin in June 2012. Securing keynote addresses from a number of international experts, published papers from the event are now forthcoming in a special issue of Journal of Philosophical Research. Four of these papers were delivered at Richard Stockton College, New Jersey, as part of an invited panel at the 2013 Meeting of the Society for Advancement of American Philosophy (SAAP). Strand 2, “Philosophical Revolutions: Pragmatism, Analytic Philosophy and Phenomenology, 1895-1935”, was organised to coincide with a companion conference commemorating the twenty fifth anniversary of UCD’s internationally ranked philosophy journal, the International Journal of Philosophical Studies. “Philosophical Revolutions” also attracted a number of high profile speakers.

With Strand 3 of the project, “Philosophy, Literature, America” (May 2014), we hope to build on the success of The American Voice to date and to raise the profile of American philosophy in Ireland, Europe and further afield.
